Dressing up as a family
I have made my kids dress in a theme with me since they were little. They usually chose the theme, but sometimes I swayed them toward what I wanted to do. Now that they are older, they still humor me sometimes. It makes for a fun time together as a family.
The kids have begged us to do their own thing in the past few years. So, as a result, my husband and I dressed up as a couple. Usually, I use a combination of purchased and DIY costumes. Here are some Halloween family costume ideas and some bonus couple ideas we have used.

Avengers family costume ideas

The boys chose which Avengers they wanted to be. For the most part, these costumes were easy to find. I went ahead and purchased the costumes for the boys. They decided on Hulk and Iron Man. When the kids were little, they wore costumes year-round. I was always up for purchasing costumes because it got their creative juices flowing. I’m optimistic my boys will save the world one day. They have been training for years.
We wore all-black clothes and boots from our closet for Loren and me to become Hawkeye and Black Widow. I topped Black Widow off with a red wig. Easy peasy! The following year I colored my hair red. It wasn’t a great look for me in real life, but I felt like I killed it as Black Widow.
Power Rangers

The year we dressed as Power Rangers, I used a ton of duct tape. Consequently, I learned that you could make just about anything with duct tape. I tried to purchase all of our costumes, but I couldn’t find any adult costumes when we needed them. I wore white leggings with a pink skirt that I found at a thrift store. Instead of sewing fabric onto my skirt to match the colors, I chose to wrap it in duct tape. As a result, the tape makes it impossible to do a high kick. Keep this in mind if you plan to fight bad guys in this costume.
Next, I covered an old pair of boots in hot pink duct tape with some black duct tape to add design. I cut the design for our shirts out of felt and hot glued it on. For the masks on Loren and me, I bought face paint and put my mad art skills to work. Loren wore a blue shirt. Unfortunately, his only white pants had a blue strip down the side… no problem. I had plenty of duct tape to cover it up!
Yo Gabba Gabba

I enjoyed the show Yo Gabba Gabba when my kids were little. I still like it. Yo Gabba Gabba is one of those shows you either love or it drives you bonkers. The songs are still stuck in my head, and my kids are now in Jr. High. “There’s a Party in my Tummy” and “Don’t Bite Your Friends” are two of my favorites. I ended up purchasing costumes for DJ Lance, Brobee, and Foofa.
Muno was made out of red sweats. I purchased an extra sweatshirt to cut up and stuffed cotton balls under circles, and then I hot glued them. Hot glue is my best friend for Halloween costumes. I then hot-glued felt on the hood for the eye and mouth. It was comfortable and warm. He wouldn’t take it off. This might be the costume that I am most proud of to this day.
Plex was made from a yellow t-shirt with sleeves cut off, some felt, and a hot glue gun. (If you are paying attention, you will notice a theme to my costume making) He put it on over a long sleeve shirt with some running pants. I got lucky and found a Plex hat that really completed the outfit.
Garden Gnome family costume ideas

Gnomes are one of my favorite themes that we have made. These DIY garden gnomes made for a simple family Halloween costume idea. I used oversized t-shirts for the kids with belts. I cut felt and hot glued it to the belt to give it a gnome-like look. Next, I cut the sleeves and the bottom of the shirt in a zigzag fashion to provide more jagged edges. Next, we put together the hats by rolling, and hot gluing felt together. Loren purchased costume beards in several different colors. Using pieces that I cut off the beard hair, I glued eyebrows onto the hats. Altogether, it was a brilliant idea, and I loved the result.
The great news about Garden Gnomes is that if you don’t want to DIY, there are tons of costumes that you can purchase from baby to adult… and even pets!

Pirates

The year we dressed as pirates was the same year we went on our Disney Cruise. On our Caribbean cruise, there was a pirate night where everyone dressed up as pirates, and Captain Jack Sparrow made an appearance. Additionally, this was the year we began our tradition of putting our Halloween costumes on and walking our dog down our favorite trail. I purchased all the costumes, and we added wigs because wigs make every costume better!
Fortnite Family Halloween
As the kids are becoming teens, they decided they wanted to be Fortnite skins. Since “pandemic socializing” involved a lot of Fortnight, we found it fitting. My youngest son required us to learn emotes as well. This was a fun one.

This was an easy family Halloween costume idea because there are so many options out there. Fortunately, I could purchase everyone’s costume but my own (because the costume version looked ridiculous on me). A Bright Bomber shirt was a perfect start to my costume. I decided to wear it over purple exercise clothes. It got spruced up with some pink hair spray, duct tape accessories, and Wa La! I had a perfect Bright Bomber Halloween costume.

Here are a bunch of other options for your Fortnite theme.

The costumes are too cute and I love that your family dressed up with the same theme.
Looks like so much fun! That’s one thing we have never done is dress up together. Would be fun to pick a theme and go to a Halloween party!

I love these fun ideas! It can be hard finding new ideas that are tasteful.
I know, Rhonda! All of the women’s costumes look nothing like the actual characters. They are all short skirts and tight clothes. That’s why I usually end up making my own. lol
My boys are obsessed with the Avengers. I didn’t realize we could make a whole family costume out of that. Great idea!
Avengers gives you SO MANY options! I love it when my kids are into things that give me many ideas to choose from.
