I have a serious sweet tooth, but sometimes I crave something savory that’s just as satisyfying. Meet your new favorite crowd-pleaser: this savory cream cheese dip! It’s everything you love about a fully loaded baked potato—but without the potato and in dip form! I should have called it “Loaded Baked Potato With Everything But The Potato Dip” but that’s way too long. Its has a creamy base, smoky bacon, sharp cheddar, and just the right hint of spice. This dip is always a hit. It’s perfect for game days, casual gatherings, or when you just need a snack that feels a little fancy but takes almost no effort.
If you’re hosting a big group, this is an easy go-to. Or, if you’re heading to a Superbowl party (or any “sportsball” event), this dip is a fan-favorite. Trust me, it’ll disappear before halftime.

Substitutions:
Although it is best as written, here are some easy ingredient substitutions you can use for this Loaded Savory Cream Cheese Dip, so you can customize it to your taste or adapt it to what you already have in your kitchen:
- Cream Cheese: Swap with Greek yogurt or mascarpone for a tangy or ultra-creamy alternative. I would not recommend cheese spread or whipped cream cheese. They add air or moisture into them, so it doesn’t give as good of a texture.
- Sour Cream: Use can use plain Greek yogurt or crème fraîche for a similar consistency with a slightly different flavor.
- Cheddar Cheese: Substitute with Monterey Jack, Colby, or even Pepper Jack for a spicier twist.
- Bacon Bits: Use turkey bacon or vegetarian bacon crumbles. For a smoky flavor without meat, try smoked paprika or liquid smoke.
- Dijon Mustard: I haven’t tried regular yellow mustard, but I imagine it can work, though it’s milder. For extra zest, use whole-grain mustard.
- Cayenne Pepper: Replace with red pepper flakes, chili powder, or omit entirely for a milder dip.
- Garlic: If fresh garlic isn’t available, use garlic powder (about 1/2 tsp).
- Chives: Green onions or finely chopped parsley make great substitutes.
- Additions: Mix in diced jalapeños for heat, sun-dried tomatoes for tang, or olives for a Mediterranean vibe.
- Experiment with blue cheese, Parmesan, or a smoked gouda for unique flavor profiles.
- Add finely chopped nuts (like pecans or almonds) for a crunch.
- Use crispy fried onions or crumbled potato chips as a garnish for extra texture and flavor.
These swaps not only help if you’re missing an ingredient but also allow you to make the recipe your own! Let me know which ones you try!
Instructions:
There is a printable recipe card at the bottom of this post with all the measurements, but here’s a step-by-step guide with helpful tips to make it easy.
Step 1:
Soften the cream cheese in the microwave just enough to stir. You want it soft but not melted—about 10 seconds on each side at regular power usually does the trick. Once softened, give it a good stir to prep it for the rest of the ingredients.

Step 2:
Add the Dijon mustard, minced garlic, and spices. Mix everything until well combined. You’ll notice the mixture changes color slightly as the spices blend in.

Step 3:
Stir in the bacon bits and most of the chives, saving a few for garnishing later. Don’t skimp on the chives—they add such a fresh flavor!

Step 4:
Add the shredded cheese and mix it thoroughly. If you’re grating your own cheese, use the smaller side of the grater to keep the dip smooth and creamy. Larger shreds can make it too lumpy.

Step 5:
Once everything is mixed together, transfer the dip to your serving bowl and top it with the reserved chives for a little extra flair. This step is optional, but it makes the dip look so inviting!

Step 6:
Serve your savory cream cheese dip with your choice of dippers. It pairs beautifully with salty options like chips or crackers and is also delightful with fresh veggies like carrots and bell peppers. While veggies might not have the same indulgent appeal, they’re still a tasty and refreshing choice, especially in January when all my guests are trying to eat “healthy” after indulging in so many holiday treats.
Presentation Tips:
Garnish it: Sprinkle a few extra chives, a pinch of paprika, or a crumble of bacon bits on top before serving. It’s a simple step, but it makes the dip look as good as it tastes!
Serve with variety: Pair the dip with an assortment of options like sturdy crackers, tortilla chips, sliced bell peppers, baby carrots, or pretzels. If you’re feeling fancy, include slices of warm baguette or lightly toasted pita bread.
Use a fun serving dish: Present the dip in a shallow bowl or small casserole dish to make it easy to scoop. If you’re hosting a party, surround the bowl with the dippers on a large platter or wooden board for a charcuterie-style setup.
Fancy it up: If you’re serving this for a more formal occasion, consider using individual ramekins or mini bowls for each guest.

Storage Tips:
Refrigerate leftovers: Store any leftover dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days. Before serving again, give it a quick stir to freshen it up or just make sure you provide a cheese knife (or even a butter knife will work). The crackers and chips tend to break off when it is fresh out of the fridge. If I’m having “one of those days” this will cause me to have a temper tantrum. Save yourself some tears and just use a knife.
Make it ahead: This dip can be made up to 24 hours in advance (but see previous tip about the knife). Simply prepare it as directed, cover it tightly with plastic wrap or a lid, and refrigerate. Wait to add the garnish until just before serving for the best presentation.
Freezing isn’t ideal: Due to the cream cheese and sour cream base, this dip doesn’t freeze well as it can separate and get a weird texture. Stick to making just what you need for your gathering!

Simple Savory Cream Cheese dip
Equipment
- 1 bowl
Ingredients
- 8 oz cream cheese 1 block
- 8 oz sour cream 1 cup
- 1 Tbsp dijon mustard
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- ½ tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp paprika
- ¼ tsp cayenne pepper
- ¼ cup bacon bits
- ¼ cup chives
- 2 cups cheddar cheese use the smallest side of the cheese grater
Instructions
- Soften the cream cheese enough to stir it. I put it in the microwave on 10 second intervals, flipping over between each one. Stir in between. You want it soft, not melted.
- Add 8oz sour cream, 1 Tbsp dijon mustard, 1 heaping tsp minced garlic, ½ tsp onion powder, ½ tsp paprika, and ¼ tsp cayenne pepper (more if you like it spicy. The amount I used is great for people like me who can't handle spice). Stir it together until it is all combined.
- Add ¼ cup bacon bits and most of the ¼ cup of chives reserving some for putting on top when it's finished. Mix well.
- Mix in the 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese. Top with the remaining chives.
- Serve with chips, vegetables, or crackers.

My husband can’t stop eating this!!! I’m pretty sure if I just left a spoon in it he would think it was his dinner! He’s not usually an appetizer guy but he couldn’t stop talking about how amazing this was!
