A Love Note Journal

My husband and I stopped giving each other cards for special occasions and started writing letters to each other in a journal. When we write a note, we leave the book on the pillow of our significant other. I have loved being able to look back at our life together as it has been recorded in our journal.

I wrote in this book every day for a month before I gave it to him, recording what I loved about him, how much I respect him, and the things that he does that I don’t show enough appreciation for. That was the original plan, but eventually, it turned into a book that we pass back and forth, and I like that even better! This might be the perfect gift if you can’t figure out what to buy your sweetheart this year.

The cologne he/she used to wear when you were dating

Over the years, I have tried to buy my husband “good smells.” Every time I did, it just didn’t seem right. Then I was at the store and stumbled upon a familiar scent. Tommy! My love wore this 18 years ago when we were dating, and that smell brought me back to that time of first being twitterpated! While this was a gift I purchased for him, it was a gift for me too. Smells can be so nostalgic. It brought me back to pizza, mini-golf, and butterflies in my stomach.

Memorabilia from your first date… or even recreate it

On our first unofficial date, my husband and I went to Carl’s Jr., rode on a kids merry-go-round, drank Starbucks coffee and walked in the rain. Then we watched Monty Python’s Search for the Holy Grail. A perfect gift might include gift cards to Carl’s Jr., a Starbucks mug from California (where we had our first date… we no longer live there), quarters for a merry-go-round, an umbrella, and a movie. Obviously yours will be different (you get the idea) unless you had the exact same first date… in which case, we should be best friends.

Adventure Challenge Couples Edition

Instead of recreating your first date, why not enjoy a bunch of exciting new adventures with your sweetheart. Still wondering what to buy your sweetheart this year? Give them 50 fun new memories with the Adventure Challenge Couples Edition.

The Adventure Challenge Couples Edition book with camera.

The Adventure Challenge Couples Edition is a personal favorite of mine. This is a book of mystery date adventures. You are given clues about the date night to help you choose your adventure. Things like cost, if you need to leave the house, get a babysitter, etc., are there to let you know what might be involved in the adventure. The fun part is that once you scratch it off, you MUST complete the challenge. Make sure to take a picture of each challenge and attach it to the book. Then journal your experience.

Not only do you get to do fun, spontaneous things, but you have a beautiful book to journal and remember the memory. This is a great resource to grow your relationship and have some fun in the process. Use the code MESSYJOYFUL at checkout and receive 10% off. They also have books for families, friends, and solo adventures.

Silly ideas of what to buy your sweetheart this Valentine’s Day

Nobody I’d Rather Lie Next to and Look at my Phone With Mug

It’s sad how real this mug is… but I feel this about my hubby.

Or this set of mugs for a couple

For the silly couple… a silly mug. I don’t know why this makes me laugh so much. You definitely need to know your audience… this one could get a good laugh, or a night on the couch.

AeroPress to make the coffee that goes into the mug

My husband is a bit of a coffee snob. He loves making a GOOD cup of coffee, and this is one of his favorites. While crafting the gourmet coffee using the AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker, he feels like a scientist. The best part about this is that it only requires hot water, so it is perfect for camping or traveling.

Personalized Socks with your face on them

I’m still waiting for someone to buy me these… with their face, not mine! I will seriously wear them all the time!

Still wondering what to buy your sweetheart?

What about a Photo Book?

Back in the day, I would scrapbook every moment. Today it is much easier to create your story with digital photo books. Mimeo Photo Books are a perfect gift that can be looked at repeatedly to remember your love story.

Buy your sweetheart a houseplant they can actually keep alive!

I have never been able to keep a houseplant alive, but I am determined that this is my year. My husband bought me a plant, and I excitedly named him Herald. He has a nice new pot and brings me joy whenever I look at him. I love him, and I love that my husband thinks I can keep him alive! Herald is a Snake Plant, and apparently, Snake Plants are hard to kill. Only time will tell.

  8. We don’t do valentine’s either, it’s our “going out anniversary” on the 21st (17 years this year!) so it seems kind of pointless paying elevated valentine’s prices. We’ve just made cards with the boys to send to their two great grans. I love the idea of writing notes and I will always happily receive a plant.

  9. I am a plant enthusiast so I definitely love the plant idea! I think Harold the plant is really cool too!

  12. Great tips. I like the journal idea the most because it allows you to reflect on how far you have both come. Thanks for sharing.
